April 1st is the official begining of Wildland Fire season in Alaska.  Burn permits from the State of Alaska are required for open buning in Upper Lynn Canal communities outside of VFD normal response areas until August 31, 2012.  See the link below to obtain a permit from the State.

Local VFD's may also require an open burning permit, and contact with your nearest VFD should be made before you attempt to burn debris.

Wildland Fire suppression in the upper Lynn Canal is the responsibility of the State of Alaska Division of Forestry in cooperation with all local Fire Departments.  To report Forest Fires directly to the Haines State Forestry office during regular business hours (8am-5pm M-F) dial 766-2120.   Dial 911 at all other times.  Please remember that you are responsible for fires you start and be careful with all potential fire hazards.

Wildland Fire Danger is an index of potential hazard when burning. Be aware that as weather conditions change, so will the wildland fire danger index!
